Bear Mountain Day Hike

Date: Sat, 1 December 2007

Rescheduled from Nov 18! In case it rains again, the rain-date is Dec 2.

Summary

Hudson River from the peak of Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain is an awesome state park with great views of the Hudson River Valley just to the south-west of West Point, NY. Its one of the more popular parks in the NJ/NY area, getting more annual visitors than Yellowstone (or so they say, could just NYers exaggerating).

The hike that we will be doing is "moderate-difficult" according to the guidebooks, but it will be nothing as crazy as the Catskills Backpacking Trip and it should be a good hike for anyone interested.

This hike is a 7 mile loop, following the Appalachian Trail for a few miles along a ridge overlooking the Hudson River. Then the trail turns back downhill into the ruins of an old mining town and cemetery. It should take 3-4 hours to finish.

We will be leaving from the shed on Livingston at 9:30 am on Sunday, Nov 8. The ride is about an hour and a half to the park, so we should return to Rutgers by 5-5:30pm. The only cost is $5 which you should bring to give to your driver for gas. You should also bring a bag lunch or money to buy lunch at Quick Check on River Road, which we'll stop by on the way up.

Cost

$5 for gas. Bring the day of the hike to give to your driver
