Pine Barrens Backpacking

Start: Fri, 24 October 2008
End: Sun, 26 October 2008

Summary

Join RUOC as we explore and backpack the Pine Barrens in South Jersey, Oct. 24 to 26. "What makes the Pine Barrens wetlands so special is the 17 trillion gallons lying underneath. As the water table reaches the surface, swamps form and the rivers flow." We will be backpacking a little more than half the Batona trial. The Batona trail stretches for 50 miles through the heart of the Pine Barrens, linking Lebanon, Wharton, and Bass River state forrests.

We will be hiking about 30 miles of the trial beginning at RT.532 near Chatsworth and Apple Pie Hill. I hope to leave around noon or 1pm from the Shed on Friday. On Friday, we will hike about 5 miles. We'll stop by the Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower which offers amazing views of the Pine Barrens then head to the Batona campsite. On Saturday, we will hike about 15 miles to the Buttonwood Hill campsite. If time allows we'll spend some time at Historic Batsto Village. On Sunday, we will hike about 12 miles to Martha's Bridge near Bass River Forrest. If we have a good pace going we may finish near Lake Absegami. This should be an easy backpacking trip for most of the trail is flat.
