About the Hike

This backpacking trip will be moderately strenuous, so if hiking isn't your thing, you might want to consider other RUOC trips. But, don't underestimate yourself because this should be a very exciting hike. We'll start out from Woodland Valley campground early on Saturday and begin our hike up to the peak of Wittenberg Mountain and then on to Cornell Mountain. We will probably camp on the "saddle" between Cornell and Slide Mountains, which has some great backpacker campsites and great views at 3500 feet. This hike is 6 miles from the Woodland Valley campsite, so we should have no problem making it before night.

Sunday we will leave the campsite between Cornell and Slide and climb up to the summit of Slide Mountain. At 4180' Slide Mountain has some of the nicest views in the Catskills. Plus, we'll be going at the height of the fall foliage season. After climbing Slide Mountain, we'll descend back towards Woodland Valley and our cars for the trip home. We can either complete the loop to the Woodland Valley Campground, which is would be 9 miles from the backpacking campsite at the saddle, or bail out to another parking area 5 miles from the previous night's campsite, where we'll leave a car to drive in back to the campground.

We can make this hike either 10 miles or 15 miles over two days, depending on the group's skill level and how ambitious we are.

Costs

The total cost will be about $25, and will include gas and tolls for the drivers, campground fees, and food for dinner Friday, breakfast, lunch and dinner Saturday, and breakfast and lunch Sunday. You should bring some spending money in case we stop at a rest stop on the way home to grab some sandwiches.
